Hades once had the authority to detain the bodiless souls of all men after death, for all had sinned...
For there is not a just man upon earth, that does good, and sins not.
It was Satan’s hope that they might remain there until judgement...
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Where having had their sinned assessed [the books were opened] a place in hell might be found for them to account for their sins forever...
12 - And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 - And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell [Greek: Hades] delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 - And death and hell [Greek: Hades] were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
But God’s Son stripped Hades of its authority when having never sinned, He entered that place through the medium of death which could neither hold Him being innocent, nor those then made innocent by His death who in their lifetimes had believed that God would keep His promise and send them a saviour...
Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth [Hades]: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.
And indeed, Hades was stripped of its authority and so Satan’s great hope of sending every man to hell was dashed...
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. [Hades Authority now taken away]
It is now Christ who has authority over Hades! he having conquered both Hades and Death....
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Therefore, Hades now detains until Judgement and sentencing those bodiless souls who during their lifetimes rejected Christ’s payment for their sins, that dying in their sins they might account for them in hell forever, while the rest are made free having received the forgiveness for sins through faith in Christ and His work of redemption on a Cross when He took all my sins away!
And He has paid for your sins too, even the sins of the whole world...
1 John 2:2
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
...a forgiveness only received through faith in Him who took the punishment for our sin upon Himself on a Cross, even God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
If God is righteous He must account for each and every act of sin else Hitler, Stalin and Satan himself would be justified in rising up and accuse Him of not offering us a sure standard by which we should live and be judged. But He has revealed it in a Law that not only exposed our fallen state and need for a saviour, but how each one of us has trampled underfoot a god-given conscience that we might attain ungodly lusts.
But our God as recorded in the Bible, not only shew us mercy by forgiving our sins, but retained His right standing before Satan and his angels by laying them on His Son, Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For He has made Him [Jesus] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
At the end of the day it is up to you, who can either ‘die in your sins’ to account for them in hell, or having believed on Jesus have them accounted for by Him when having suffered for sin He died before rising to life, even eternal life purchased for you and me and all that trust on His Name.
