Recently I commented on an article where a Christian oil company was reported to be drilling for oil in Israel, no doubt encouraged by prophecies such as...
18 - And of Zebulun he said, Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out; and, Issachar, in thy tents.
19 - They shall call the people unto the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures hid in the sand.
During the discussion the issue of where biblical ‘Tarshish’ or ‘Tharshish’ might be arose, with many such as myself having accepted that it was in Spain however, some challenged this based on scriptures such as...
12 - Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs.
13 - Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were thy merchants: they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market.
Their argument is that Tyrus, with whom the verse relates not only traded with Tarshish but traded in tin, and as tin was almost exclusively found in what we call today “The United Kingdom”, then Tarshish must be the British Isles. Add to this the fact that while seeking to get as far away from the presence of God as fast as he could, Jonah caught a ship from Joppa on the Mediterranean coast to Tarshish. The argument only gains credibility when you consider that Spain was hardly on the extremes of the old world, but the UK was.
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
Additionally, Tarshish is often mentioned in context of isles.
The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them...
And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off...
However, without having studied the subject [Prov 18:13] I rejected their arguments [Prov 17:28] based on the fact that King Solomon constructed his fleet at Ezion–geber, which is the other side of Africa.
1 Kings 9:26-28
And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion–geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.
Which most suppose went to Tarshish, as Solomon’s descendant King Jehoshaphat who thought to reestablish his trade route was refused by God because he had joined himself to wicked Ahaziah, king of Northern Israel even Samaria.
2 Chronicles 20:35-36
35 - And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:
36 - And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Ezion–geber.
My ill thought-out argument was that Tarshish must be ‘East of Israel’, else why would Solomon and Jehoshaphat build their fleets in Eziongeber, which without Suez yet to be cut through the sands some thousands of years later should force their newly constructed fleets to have to circumvent the whole of Africa just to reach the The British Isles [Tarshish]. I mean, if they wished to trade with The British Isles why not build their fleets on the coast of the Mediterranean, sparing them having to circumvent the African continent? Therefore I supposed, Tarshish must be East of Israel right? [wrong] :(
But then, by the very same reasoning my argument fell flat on its face because if indeed as I had supposed, Tarshish was East of Israel, why would Jonah catch a ship to Tarshish from Joppa on the Mediterranean coast in an effort to flee from the presence of God. Why not catch a ship from Eziongeber?
It seems to me that my error was built upon the fact that I had failed to understand that trade in the old world was not only vast and well established, but highly organised. I mean, think of all of the infrastructure required for such transactions... not least the translators, accountants and traders. Therefore, although Solomon’s fleet was built at Eziongeber, Tarshish was only the furtherest trading point among many on the way some of whom would have been resource rich such as Ophir with its gold and Tarshish its highly sought after tin while others such as Tyre lived off their wits, having no resources at all but only an appetite for dealing with trade and finance. Additionally, I am reminded that Solomon’s fleet left Eziongeber on a three year round trip, which hints at visiting trading points throughout the Africa coast as they collected Apes and Ivory on their way to and from Tarshish.
1 Kings 10:21-23
21 - And all king Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; none were of silver: it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.
22 - For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.
23 - So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom.
Anyway, there is an awful lot more I could say on this subject but I need to move on to more relevant issues, especially regarding the times in which we now live only to say that I am now much more willing to entertain the notion that the United Kingdom is ancient Tarshish.
While debating these issues in the previously mentioned thread, I contacted a studious friend who had recently ordered a DVD series produced by ‘Derek Walker of Oxford Bible Church’ who was sure it promoted the idea that the United Kingdom was indeed Tarshish. A few days later the DVDs arrived which not only argued that the UK was Tarshish, but whose main theme stated that that Russia, being Gog was about to force upon Israel the Two State Solution recently ratified by the UN. These events he believed would take place suddenly, when Russia with its confederation of nations would storm onto The Mountains of Israel [The West Bank].
Derek Walker - The Imminent Invasion of Israel.
The main theme of Ezekiel 38 could well be that Russia [if it is indeed Gog] seeks to enforce upon Israel the the UN’s recently ratified Two State Solution, knowing full well that in the process of time it would spell the deathnel for Israel which thereafter could not defend herself. But my thought is that finding herself at such an advantage on the mountains of Israel, Russia only then decides to walk into the rest of the nation and acquire her gas and oil reserves.
8 - After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel [The West Bank], which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 - Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.
10 - Thus saith the Lord God; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 - And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
Either way, we all know that God will destroy all but a sixth of her armies as she grandstands on the West Bank while the Muslim hoards praise her. For Ezekiel 39 leaves us in no doubt that God Himself will destroy Gog leaving only a sixth part to return and tell of God’s deliverance of tiny Israel. Indeed, the text clearly states that the whole world will have to acknowledge, at least before they have time to harden their hearts and reason it away... that the God of the Bible delivered Israel.
1 - Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
2 - And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel [The West Bank]:
Derek Walker is confident that these events will take place soon, and that when they do many Muslims whose great hope of a two state solution is bound-up with their god will, having seen our God’s deliverance of Israel seek those who know Him. And that we of Tarshish [The UK] and her daughters [US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia etc] shall not only be blessed, but have the opportunity to preach The Gospel as never before. Therefore we must be ready when Islam, Gog and the EU falls.
I include ‘The EU’ because imagine my surprise, when a few days later I received an email containing a prophecy recently given by David Noakes, which speaks of a soon to come event that will thrown our nation [and no doubt others] into turmoil, with people fighting in the streets.
The shock Islam would suffer at the fall of Gog and their beloved ‘Two State Solution’ could easily be the catalyst which spawns the violence mentioned by David Noakes, as British Muslims go wild and our ‘Weeping Left’ join them angered by our departure from Satan’s dictatorial European Union. For as I have long laboured, I believe Satan must create his authoritative New World Order on earth before and not after he has been cast out of his current position of advantage [Rev 12:7-9] if he has any chance of pulling off his penultimate survival plan, his Antichrist thereafter having only three and a half years to instigate Satan’s plan once appeared. And with Trump and our withdrawal from the EU only compounding Satan’s problems resulting from the collapse of the ‘Two State Solution’ I can understand why David Noakes states that Satan is not only furious, but terrified as an eternal hell inches ever closer as his plans fail him.
This is a time of turmoil and upheaval because your adversary is in great rage and great fear.
- Quote from David Noakes’ prophecy.
This is all rather encouraging, because although terrors may surround we ‘the remnant’ having seen much of the Church fall into apostasy have wondered why God continues to drive us to know His Word while every visible sign tells us that all that is left is to hold on until the end. But this changes everything, because our labour will not have been in vain but soon rather than being refused by the masses, some may very well begin to seek us out.
For nearly twenty years I have studied the scriptures daily, and almost entirely alone upon a sickbed but maybe soon God shall raise me to join the remnant who likewise shall appear out of the bushes, off sickbed and out of dark trials to enter into this one last great harvest of souls here in Tarshish, before the end comes. Amen!
