Chance and Favour

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
1 - There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
2 - a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 - a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 - a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 - a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
6 - a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 - a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 - a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

I’m 50 years old now, and in those years I have seen so much folly committed under the sun, but most ashamedly... by myself. I have seen the simple gain promotion over the learned, the strong flee before the weak and beauty fall at the feet of base men... and I couldn’t understand what made one man prosper while another fell. But then I understood that ‘Chance and Favour’ comes to us all, but not all are ready to take it when it appears.

Matthew 5:45
He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

I have come to understand that it is not those fleeting moments when ‘Chance and Favour’ appears that are important, God has promised that they will always present themselves before us, you can be sure of that. But rather, it is those intervals in-between that we should focus our attention on... and prepare our hearts for. Because hope all you wish, if your heart is not prepared before God when it appears, though you grasp ‘Chance and Favour’ with both hands, it will turn to ashes before your very eyes, or from a blessing into a curse if you refuse to let go of it.

Ecclesiastes 9:11
I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favour to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

What chance then the budding actor if he hasn’t prepared for the audition or the athlete the Olympics if he be a slouch? And they know when the day their opportunity will come... but we know not when ‘Chance and Favour’ shall appear. But I tell you that it certainly will... and that it has already been commanded to do so by He who is seated in the Throne-room of God, and is on its way towards you even as you read these words of mine.

Then if nothing else, understand this; whatever mess you’ve made of your life, whatever pit you have found yourself in... ‘Chance and Favour’ is going to present itself before you again, that I promises you. But if you really want to take hold of it this time... that it blesses and does not harm, don’t just sit around pining for the day it should appear, even making lofty promises to yourself... ‘how it will be different next time’, but rather do this...

Start preparing your heart to receive it TODAY!

...and when next ‘Chance and Favour’ comes your way, you will not only recognise it for what it is, but as a seed that happens upon good soil it will spring to life the moment you take hold of it. Why? For findings its roots sinking deeply into an ordered heart, it shall draw no poisoned substance as before to kill or stunt its growth. But rather, drawing pure vitality from the spiritual springs of of a heart that is right before God, it shall bring forth its fruit abundantly in its season... all of the days of your blessed life, and nobody can take it away from you. For the strength of the strong man of your life will have been broken, who can do no more than stand and watch as you grow in favour before God and men.

Proverbs 16:7
When a man’s ways are pleasing to the LORD, he makes even his enemies live at peace with him.

Life can change my friend, in a moment of time if you will only prepare your heart before God... this, though in humble circumstances I have set myself to do. Stop trusting in your own ways, it is they which have brought you to your present dilemma, be that good or bad. So that when ‘Chance and Favour’ presents itself to you again, you can take it with both hands and it shall do you good, and not harm.

I know not where you are regarding your standing before God, maybe you are considering these things. But I know this, that if you be the most basest of persons, or the most fervent Christian... God honours those who out of respect for His Son... begin to order their lives aright because of Him.

For if through recognition of Christ and those who are His, you begin to address that which is wrong in your life, God who alone searches the heart, ‘will’ instantly turn His attention towards you... for He longs to be gracious to you. He will try you, and see if your efforts are proven with deeds... and if they be proven as true, expect God to move in your life, for He reaches with out stretched arms to the most vilest sinner. It matters not what hole you have cast yourself... nor with what filth you have covered yourself, God always honours those who seek to honour Him.

Isaiah 30:18
Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!

Holdfast and do not retreat, do not be as the dog who returns to eat his own vomit but leave those things behind you, where they belong. For I know through experience that God tries our efforts to see if our words are true... and in the darkest hour when we are almost sure He has not cared for our efforts, our breakthrough will come and we will not loose our reward.

Matthew 10:42
“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”

Join me then, even today and let us together set our hearts right before God. I don’t have to tell you what God has been telling you to put right in your life, and I’m certainly not going to tell you all that He has been commanding me... but if our hearts be found true when next ‘Chance and Favour’ appears... entires lives can and will be changed.

If you are a Christian our not, come taste and see if the Lord is good... and when you have tasted that He is indeed good, follow Him, even unto life eternal.

Psalm 34:8
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
